Already in the title 2001: A Space Odyssey Homer's epic is mentioned - but what does the cryptic film about a rather lengthy space adventure with the fate of the Greek heroes after the fall of Troy to do?
Several references and rather vague parallels to reveal itself: the name of Bowman refers to the competition, which turns out to Odysseus on his return to Ithaca, which is still the best archer, and therefore recognized in the his house besieged suitors as a landlord shall, before killing them all. A parallel to the IX. Singing, we recognize the shutdown HAL: how one-eyed Polyphemus, the monster here blinded in his own lair and disempowered them: HAL is also not completely turned off (which would amount to the murder of Polyphemus) reduced, but only to its basal control functions. Also can the Requiem by Gyorgy Ligeti, which can be heard every time the appearance of the monolith, as a distant homage to the seductive siren song indicate that gives the listener all the knowledge about the world as the Monlith the apes to encourage the use of tools appears.
Herbert James Draper: Odysseus and the Sirens
also narrative parallels can be produced, albeit more slowly: the extract in a distant world connects Bowman and Odysseus, with both travel with a (space) ship through a huge, unknown wilderness (sea, outer space). Both are long time away, but waits for no Bowman pious woman weaving in the home. Besides his parents, who appear in a fairly low informative video message, Bowman seems to have no one to whom he longed to return. It must exist in the universe to fight HAL, who turns out to be a kind of Trojan horse for the crew inside the spacecraft, whose life he actually received and not to extinguish. The astronauts are in the Discovery imprisoned as Priam's people within the impregnable walls of Troy. However, this comparison is lagging, especially as Bowman struggles as Odysseus counterpart for this on the wrong side.
In any case, raises the odyssey numerous associations in the title - on a popular level, hardly anyone knows the real story of Odysseus, the Odyssey allerdigns combine the most an adventurous odyssey. So the odyssey works for 2001 as an effective marketing tool that will also not particularly misleading, as presented in fact a kind of random walk.
